Haulage boss to champion longer trucks
Date: 01 August 2008
The boss of a large haulage firm is urging the government to consider trialling larger trucks for haulage work.
Andrew Tinkler of Eddie Stobart is set to meet with Department for Transport officials next week, in a bid to get on-road trials for longer trucks, reports RoadTransport.com.
The news provider notes that Mr Tinkler's idea includes having a trailer which is 950mm longer than a regular semi-trailer and equipped with a rear-steer axle to maintain the current turning circle, which he asserts will see a load fill improvement of ten per cent.
He adds that this could see transport companies benefiting financially by some £9 billion.
The government rejected a trial of longer, heavier vehicles earlier this year, after a report it commissioned deemed them to be not compatible for UK roads.
However, the Freight Transport Association said that by rejecting the concept outright, the government had missed out on an opportunity to make carbon savings as such trucks can leads to a 30 per cent reduction in emissions.
