Proposal may see trucks banned from overtaking on A12

Date: 29 July 2008

A trial ban on trucks conducting haulage work overtaking on the A12 has been recommended at a recent inquiry.

The Essex Chronicle reports that the local council thinks this measure, and other proposed actions, will help improve the road's performance and speed up recovery from accidents

It was also suggested that substandard lay-bys be replaced.

The inquiry heard arguments for widening the A12 to three lanes, according to the publication, which adds that that it was unable to back this recommendation.

Speaking to the Ipswich Evening Star about the proposal, the head of the commission, Sir David Rowlands, the former secretary of state for transport, said: "We think there's a strong case for a pilot and an equally strong case for introducing a trial 60mph limit on that stretch."

It was previously reported that the Freight Transport Association has deemed plans to impose weight restrictions on trucks conducting haulage work on certain roads near Somerset as flawed.

The body stated that to avoid these roads truck drivers will have to extend their journeys, creating a bigger carbon footprint.
