TransAction in row with RHA

Date: 16 May 2008

A row has erupted between pressure group TransAction and the RHA after the trade association for the haulage work industry has refused to back a planned legal demonstration at the end of May.

The RHA has previously said it would support legal protests by representatives from transport contractors, haulage exchange firms and road haulage companies provided there was sufficient backing from its membership.

However, the RHA has declined to offer the pressure group any support and the demonstration, which will involve truck drivers, transport contractors and those involved in haulage work, will take place without the body's backing.

Mike Presneill, one of the leaders of TransAction, told RoadTransport.com: "The RHA is doing the UK road haulage industry an injustice by not supporting [its] membership."

He added that the body seemed to "spend too much time and money" on conferences that do not address the key concerns of the haulage industry.

Meanwhile, the RHA has welcomed news that the UK haulage work industry will not allow trucks from Eastern Europe to access the market for another year.
