Volvo safety system wins award
Date: 16 May 2008
Volvo's new City Safety system has won a technology award at the Fleet World Honours Awards in London and has the potential to protect self employed couriers from taking costly time off work.
The system will be available for couriers to purchase as a standard feature from October and will be fitted in the Volvo XC60, which can be used by those people with owner driver jobs.
Self employed couriers and owner drivers will be interested to know that the system uses laser sensor technology to detect other vehicles up to ten metres in front of the bumper.
It also reacts whether the other vehicle is at a standstill or moving slowly and applies the brakes automatically if the courier's van is getting too close.
The technology has the potential to reduce the risk of collision and protect owner drivers and UK couriers from personal injury and damage to their vehicles.
Owner driver couriers could also see their insurance premiums drop if their vehicle has this technology as standard.
John Wallace, corporate sales and leasing manager for Volvo Car UK, said: "With surveys indicating that all reported collisions take place under speeds of 18 miles per hour, it's easy to see the potential for reducing incidents."
Volvo claims its trucks are sold in more than 130 countries all over the world through over 1,000 dealerships.
