Haulage drivers stage protest against fuel prices

Date: 13 May 2008

Approximately 40 haulage drivers in the Norwich region staged a protest against increasing fuel prices yesterday.

The drivers took part in a 'go slow' which involved them driving in two convoys along the A47 dual carriageway very slowly in the rush hour, almost bringing traffic to a standstill.

One of the freight trucks bore a banner reading "Honk if you want cheaper fuel" and the publication notes that a number of motorists beeped their horns in response.

Despite this, turnout for the protest war much lower than expected, as the organisers had hoped for more than 1,000 haulage trucks to be in attendance.

Organiser Gary Cooper, 42, told the Mirror: "I'm not a political person. I'm just a working man and I am doing this for my family and for the common man.

"I've had calls from people all over the country expressing support - including little old ladies."

This is the latest in a spate of protests from haulage drivers over the rising cost of fuel.

Some 250 hauliers descended upon central London at the end of April, calling for help from the government.
