EIC criticises parliamentary group's stance on biofuels
Date: 13 May 2008
The Environmental Industries Commission (EIC) has criticised a parliamentary committee for questioning the benefits of investment into biofuels, which could affect haulage companies trying to go green.
RoadTransprt.com reports that the EIC feels that the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee failed to distinguish between biofuel produced in a sustainable manner and that which is not.
The parliamentary group had stated that "policies that encourage demand for first-generation biofuels are damaging".
A spokesperson for the EIC told the news provider: "The problem with this is that they have created a level of uncertainty which means that nobody is now investing in biofuels."
The commission argues that all the wheat grown for biofuel in the UK is produced in a sustainable manner and that the recent rise in food prices, which is sometimes attributed to biofuels, is more the result of poor harvests.
Meanwhile, it was recently reported that a haulage company, H Wragg Transport, has made its fleet carbon neutral by only using the clean, pure biofuel - Verdant Fuel.
