Roadsafe welcomes plans for new driver qualifications

Date: 13 May 2008

Roadsafe has welcomed the government's proposals to develop qualifications for at-work drivers such as couriers.

The organisation stated that the Department for Transport proposals to reform how people learn to drive will encourage a culture in which driving is a "lifelong" learning curve.

In a statement the group said that vocational qualifications for van drivers and those providing a courier service is a "vital component" of the skill for life concept.

Roadsafe director Adrian Walsh said: "Many organisations already see the real benefits of investing in the training and career development of those who drive on business. Measures include advanced driving courses."

He added that once the qualifications are in place he hopes they will become part of companies' staff recruitment processes.

The new qualifications were recently announced by transport minister Ruth Kelly.

As a result of discussions with employers, insurance companies and drivers, the government will introduce a new driving syllabus which will include extra measures for younger drivers in addition to advanced training qualifications, a course in motorways skills and a vocational qualification for those working as van drivers or couriers.
