Police hold get-togethers with haulage drivers

Date: 12 May 2008

UK police are initiating get-togethers with drivers in a bid to improve communication with haulage companies.

RoadTransprt.com reports that these 'stammtischs' – named after a similar scheme ran by German police – are being carried out by the Metropolitan Police's Commercial Vehicle Education Unit and funded by Transport for London.

The police have a monthly stall at a service station on the M25 where they chat to drivers about the regulations affecting haulage companies and hand out leaflets.

Speaking about the scheme, policeman John Garvey told the news provider that he thought they were proving successful, saying: "We feel we will get a better response from drivers using educational techniques rather than beating them over the head with a big stick."

The website previously reported that the scheme could be especially beneficial for freight drivers working for smaller companies as they are sometimes not informed of recent rule changes due to time and resources issues.
