New system alerts drivers to speed limits

Date: 12 May 2008

A new road safety system which warns drivers when they are travelling above the speed limit could be of benefit for couriers.

Transport for London (TfL) is creating a digital map of the capital, including details of every street within the M25's speed limit, which vehicle owners can download onto their satnav systems.

According to the Daily Mail, it is hoped that the system will help drivers, including those working as couriers, who have received speeding fines for accidentally driving too fast.

Speaking to the publication, TfL's road safety chief Chris Lines said: "There is a definite role there to be played by having vehicles which actually keep to the speed limit and perhaps longer term we can use vehicle technology to actually manage speed."

The technology is reportedly "well advanced" and is being tested on TfL's own vans and cars.

Meanwhile, it was previously reported that a satnav system which uses on-screen photographs could be utilised by courier drivers.

The NDrive claims to be the first satellite navigation system to utilise such technology and comes complete with photos of 29 major UK cities – which could be of benefit to couriers working in the UK's major centres.
