Plans for lorry parks in Suffolk stall

Date: 09 May 2008

Plans to build lorry parks for haulage drivers working in Suffolk are being met with criticism as some groups are concerned over their commercial viability.

According to RoadTransport.com, local councils are hoping to provide safe and secure overnight facilities in the region for the freight drivers working at the nearby deep-sea container terminal and others driving in the area.

Included in the proposals is a plan to build truck parks every 20 to 30 miles along the truck road network.

However, the local authorities are reportedly reluctant to approve developers' plans unless they can offer at least 250 spaces as a truckstop operator has claimed that this is the minimum needed for the operation to be commercially viable.

The website adds that a countywide parking survey in 2007 showed that there was a demand for almost 650 parking spaces in Suffolk, with 500 of these along the A14, demonstrating the need for a conclusion to this issue in the near future.

Meanwhile, this follows news that haulage drivers should ensure they are getting enough sleep as research shows one in three individuals are sleep deprived.
