Congestion worsens on UK roads

Date: 09 May 2008

Couriers conducting business in UK cities may be finding themselves slowed down by ever-increasing traffic jams.

According to a report in the Times, motorists are facing massive queues on motorways across the country because the government has failed in its pledge to cut congestion.

The publication states that delays have increased on all 100 key routes that the Department for Transport said it would tackle in a bid to reduce journey times.

According to official figures released yesterday, the average motorist, including those providing a courier service, now spends an extra ten seconds at a standstill for every ten miles on the key routes.

A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency told the news provider that the government had failed to predict the impact of long-running roadworks, such as the widening of the M1, while last year's floods are being blamed for a quarter of the increase in total delays.

Meanwhile, in what could be good news for couriers working in the area, proposals for a congestion charge in Nottingham are expected to be scrapped today, reports the city's Evening Post.
