Haulage drivers should ensure they get enough sleep
Date: 08 May 2008
Recent research has highlighted the dangers of driving when fatigued, as being tired behind the wheel can lead to serious accidents, something which could especially relate to haulage drivers.
A new survey conducted in Ireland found that one in three individuals are sleep deprived, with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) claiming that up to 20 per cent of crashes are caused by driver fatigue, reports IrishHealth.com.
The findings show that 23 per cent of individuals get less than six hours sleep a night, especially people aged between 26 and 45-years-old.
Conor Stapleton of Kaymed bed designers, which carried out the survey, said: "Without deep, restorative sleep our bodies can't keep up the pace we demand of them."
Meanwhile, it was recently reported that the RSA has called for a lower drink drive limit for heavy goods vehicle drivers.
In a new government report, the body advocates lowering the legal limit to 20mg for haulage drivers as well as new road users and those driving work vehicles.
