New driving test initiatives could benefit couriers
Date: 07 May 2008
Courier workers could soon find themselves able to refresh their driving skills as part of a new government initiative.
Transport secretary Ruth Kelly recently announced a series of proposals aimed at reforming the way people learn to drive, with the long-term goal of reducing the number of accidents on the roads.
As a result of discussions with employers, insurance companies and drivers, the government will introduce a new syllabus which could include advanced training qualifications, a course in motorways skills and a vocational qualification for those working as van drivers or couriers.
Speaking about the proposals, Ms Kelly said: "It is time for a new approach to learning to drive. We must make sure that novice drivers are safe drivers when they have passed their test. We must also create an expectation of lifelong learning, so that people continue advanced learning after their test."
Meanwhile, in related news, a report into possible future technologies by Ofcom has revealed that new wireless devices could help prevent car collisions.
These intelligent transport systems would enable vehicles to communicate with one another and alert other road users to sudden braking.
You too can make the headlines with bigger and better courier contracts, find out how!
