New speed alert signs implemented in Edinburgh
Date: 02 May 2008
A new form of speed alert could have an impact on couriers working in Edinburgh, it has emerged.
Rather than installing speed cameras, the city's council has opted to use electronic signs which provide a warning telling drivers to slow down, after it emerged that they had reduced accidents by 60 per cent.
The signs are activated when a passing driver breaks the speed limit, causing them to flash a warning to brake, reports the Scotsman.
Currently, there are six signs in place throughout the capital and a further 50 possible locations for six more to be installed later in the year.
City transport leader Phil Wheeler told the newspaper: "Installing further signs at key hotspots should help to reinforce the message that speeding contributes to accidents and will not be tolerated."
Meanwhile, it was recently reported that more than 40 per cent of drivers, including those working as couriers, are fined annually for illegal parking, speeding and other offences, according to official figures in the annual Ministry of Justice Motoring Offences and Breath Test Bulletin.
This equates to £800 million in fines annually.
