Haulage companies warned of fuel price hikes

Date: 02 May 2008

Haulage companies are being warned that there could be a massive increase in fuel prices over the coming months.

According to reports, petrol prices could rocket to £1.50 per litre by autumn, with unleaded prices currently standing at a peak of 113.9p per litre and 123.9p per litre for diesel.

Oil prices recently hit a high of $120 dollars (£60) per barrel and could be up as high as $200 dollars soon, warns Opec, the oil producing cartel.

Speaking to the Lancashire Evening Post about how the hike will impact on the region, Louise Doherty, spokesman for Petrol Prices.com, said: "It is difficult to say when it will hit £1.50 if this area is slightly cheaper than the national average, but I do think it is still inevitable.

"Oil prices don't tend to come down significantly. It is really important the government addresses high oil prices."

This follows news that a number of haulage companies have been in London to draw attention to rising fuel costs.

Some 100 freight trucks gathered in the capital to protest against the high prices of fuel, which have increased by more than 30 per cent in the past 12 months.
