Haulage companies urged to go green

Date: 01 May 2008

A haulage company has boosted its 'green' credentials by dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of its freight fleet and is urging other operators to do the same.

H Wragg Transport of Shropshire has converted all of its 15 44-tonne tractor units to operate on a clean, pure biofuel - Verdant Fuel - by installing an ELSBETT system into them, reports MHW magazine.

Verdant is an entirely natural product made from plant oil and as such is made from completely sustainable and renewable ingredients; this means that the freight vehicles use 30 times less carbon dioxide than those used by many haulage companies.

Malcolm Wragg, who runs operations at the company, told the publication: "I believe that the transport industry must take positive steps to reduce its environmental impact, which will involve cutting vehicle emissions. Converting our own fleet to operate on this new fuel will help to meet that objective."

He urged other haulage companies to follow in his footsteps, saying that it is "surprisingly easy" to become carbon neutral.

This follows news from Federation of Engine Re-manufacturers that there is scope to expand the market for re-manufactured engine products and increase quality standards, which could help lead to a cut in carbon emissions from vehicles.
