Haulage drivers protest fuel duty
Date: 30 April 2008
A number of haulage companies were present at a recent fuel protest in London.
Some 100 trucks gathered on Park Lane yesterday morning to protest against the rate of duty on diesel, reports RoadTransport.com.
The protesting haulage drivers are also planning on submitting a petition to MPs and one road haulage company carried a coffin lamenting the bankruptcy of many smaller freight firms.
A spokesperson for one of the haulage companies present, Sarah Knight, told the website: "We're looking for the government to take Road Haulage Association's (RHA) advice and describe the hauliers as essential users and give a tax rebate."
The Times reports that the chief executive of the RHA has written to chancellor Alistair Darling urging him to defer the planned two pence hike in duty and appoint a fuel duty regulator.
Meanwhile, it was recently reported that the Scottish National Party has also called for a fuel regulator to be put into place to protect haulage firms.
