Glasgow to implement LEZ

Date: 30 April 2008

Courier workers in Glasgow could soon see themselves facing fines if they drive high-emission vehicles.

According to the BBC, the city is planning to introduce a low emission zone (LEZ) in a bid to improve the air quality and reduce congestion in its centre.

Glasgow city council will discuss the proposal, which would involve tackling vehicles idling at the roadside, at a meeting this Friday.

Speaking to the news provider, councillor Ruth Smith said: "We take our responsibility to monitor air quality in Glasgow very seriously and the main source of pollutants in the city is road traffic.

"Every individual has to take responsibility, and seriously consider how they can reduce their own carbon footprint."

The city has already committed itself to introducing a LEZ by the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Meanwhile, it was recently reported that the LEZ in London is proving quite effective, with the number of non-compliant vehicles entering the area dropping from eight per cent to under five per cent since February.
