TfL plans to improve haulage services in London

Date: 29 April 2008

Transport for London (TfL) has launched a plan to improve operating standards in London.

Some 400 haulage companies have already signed up to its Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS), which was officially launched last week, reports RoadTransport.com.

The initiative, which is free to join and open to all van and lorry owners, aims to ensure that anyone delivering loads within London meets certain standards.

Once a company has joined, a member of the Metropolitan Police Service Commercial Vehicle Education Unit will visit the haulage company's premises and carry out an assessment.

The company will then be awarded a gold, silver or bronze membership to FORS.

Speaking to the website about the scheme, which hopes to have 500 members by the end of the year, Stephen Steele, head of TfL's freight unit, said: "We hope the scheme will encourage freight operators to focus on how they can adopt better working practices to make them stand out from their competitors and make their businesses more efficient."

This follows news that the government has set various targets for the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, which aim to help make life easier for freight firms in the UK.
