Couriers in Sussex at risk of fines as speeding costs drivers £4m

Date: 28 April 2008

Speed camera fines have cost drivers in the Sussex area more than £4 million in the past 12 months, it has emerged.

According to the Argus, some 68,000 vehicles, including courier and owner drivers were caught out by the technology, leading some to conclude that speed cameras are becoming a revenue generator rather than a safety measure.

East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton told the publication: "While we need to do much more to cut down on serious accidents, there are many more ways of doing that rather than just relying on the blunt instrument of a speed camera on stretches of road where there are not many accidents."

Despite the high number of fines given out in the past 12 months, there was actually a fall in numbers of about 10,000 since the previous year when 83,476 offences were detected.

This follows news from the Newham Recorder that a new "Wi-Fi" speed camera may catch out courier and owner drivers in the Newham area.

Approximately 34 of the new cameras, which can communicate with each other and track cars, have been placed along the A13.
