SNP calls for fuel price regulator to protect haulage firms

Date: 25 April 2008

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has called for a fuel price regulator to be put in place to protect haulage firms as the price of diesel increases.

Fuel duties make up more than 65 per cent of the price of diesel and petrol, and a regulator would mean that there was an automatic freeze on duty increases and a reduction in duty to match any VAT increases.

A mechanism would be introduced so that higher oil prices would trigger lower fuel tax. At the current time, the price of oil is very high, and high diesel costs are putting a terrible strain on freight firms.

Stewart Hosie, SNP Treasury spokesperson, said: "It's more than ironic that Scotland, as one of world's largest oil producers, is hit hardest as our haulage industry is most vulnerable to high pump prices and motorists in rural areas face longer journeys.

"With the average price of petrol now in excess of £1 per litre, the case for a fuel price regulator is overwhelming, and the Chancellor must take urgent action to protect hard-pressed motorist and hauliers."
