EU road haulage set to expand until 2030
Date: 24 April 2008
Road haulage in European Union countries is due to expand constantly until the year 2030, a new study shows.
The European Commission figures indicate that the 2,464 gpkm (a unit meaning one billion tonnes carried over one kilometre) carried by freight transport in 2005 will increase to 2,770 by 2010.
And because haulage is vital to the economy, it will keep on growing, to 3,061 gpkm by 2015, 3,321 by 2020, 3,546 by 2025, and 3,717 by 2030, Commercial Motor reports.
Most of the growth will be seen in road haulage, which will increase its share of freight transport from 72.6 per cent in 2005 to 75.4 per cent by 2030.
The study, which was conducted by the National Technical University of Athens in Greece, also found that the amount of freight per unit of GDP would fall because of factors like productivity.
The high fuel cost is one significant growing pressure that road haulage is facing at the current time.
