Norwich congestion charge plans stall

Date: 24 April 2008

Plans to launch a congestion charge in Norwich that would have affected courier drivers appear to have stalled, EDP24 reports.

Transport chiefs in the area concluded that the scheme would not bring in enough money to fund other transport improvements.

It was concluded that a £100 million bypass to the north of the city would be better - as it would alleviate congestion for couriers and other motorists.

Adrian Gunson, a cabinet member for planning and transportation in Norwich, said: "The council always envisaged that an acceptable road pricing scheme would have to provide funds for significantly improved public transport and to accelerate projects such as the northern distributor road.

"Pricing people off the city centre streets without offering attractive alternatives is not what we are trying to achieve. It seems clear to me that the road pricing does not have a part to play at the present time in helping to solve transport problems and congestion in and around Norwich."
