Roads 'must be cleared faster' after crashes

Date: 22 April 2008

Haulage and freight truckers have called on police to reopen roads quicker following minor car crashes, it has been reported.

Speaking out after a minor collision on North Wales' A55 left the road closed near Pentre Halkyn for almost an hour, Geoff Dunning, a spokesperson for the Road Haulage Association said that traffic jams caused by delays in reopening roads were costly to haulage companies.

Mr Dunning told the Daily Post: "The roads are our production lines and while it may be a cliche, time is money. Accidents are regrettable and drivers realise the injured must be cared for as a matter of urgency. We accept that.

"Our concern is when the police close roads for longer than necessary where it is clear an accident investigation is unlikely."

Meanwhile, haulage truck drivers have been among those expressing discontent at the recent rise in petrol prices, which allowed the Treasury to collect an extra £117 million in monthly VAT.

Haulage truckers pay 65.2 pence in tax for every £1 they spend on petrol, nearly double that of any other European nation, according to the Daily Express.
