Government needs to offer fuel support to haulage firms
Date: 21 April 2008
The government needs to provide support for haulage companies struggling with record high fuel prices.
That is according to the Freight Transport Association (FTA), which pointed out that increasing fuel costs were "a major cause of concern for every UK business supplying goods and services".
The bulk price of diesel for haulage companies is approaching £1 per litre and is putting a severe strain on these firms.
"The bulk price of diesel has risen from 75p per litre at 1 January 2006 to 97p per litre today," said the FTA's Geoff Dossetter.
"These prices are a major problem in themselves but they are now coupled with the dangerous uncertainty as to how high they might reach before they stabilise and uncertainty is the enemy of any business strategy.
"The fuel price burden is something which, despite real advances in efficiency, the transport industry is unable to shoulder all by itself.
He therefore urged the government to acknowledge the problem and "provide support for operators of essential vehicles".
The FTA wants there to be a difference between the way motorists pay fuel duty and the way that freight firms do.
