Freight driver fined for making up hijack attack

Date: 18 April 2008

A Manchester freight lorry driver has been fined for pretending a gang had tried to hijack his vehicle, the BBC reports.

David Bebbington of Blackley, Manchester, told police he had fought off a gang of masked attackers trying to steal his haulage truck, which belonged to Garic of Bury, in a lay-by on the A90.

He said the gang had sped off in a Ford Focus, and police cars were sent out to look for the car.

However, his story fell apart and he was forced to admit the attack was mere fantasy.

"It never happened at all. I made it up. It was a cry for help I suppose," he said.

He said he could not explain why he did it, although he did say it was not as a joke or out of malice.

He was fined £1,000 at Perth Sheriff's court.
