Boris: I will review LEZ zonePopular

Date: 17 April 2008

Boris Johnson has said that he will review the London low emission zone (LEZ) if he becomes mayor, and listen to what freight operators have to say.

In a question and answer session with Motor Transport, the three main mayoral candidates spelled out their approaches to the zone, which current mayor Ken Livingstone says was introduced to cut dangerous air pollution.

Boris, the Conservative candidate, said: "I am behind the aims of the LEZ – but it is clear that this scheme has been hastily implemented by Livingstone.

"I pledge to re-hold a consultation on the western extension and be bound by its results. I will also review the LEZ and listen to Londoners – including freight operators and other transport businesses."

Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat candidate Brian Paddick said he opposes the scheme, adding that it will only result in a tiny improvement in air quality.

"It is clear from discussions I have had with traders that his scheme may well threaten their businesses," he said.

The zone requires the worst-polluting freight vehicles entering London to pay a hefty daily charge or face a fine.
