Haulage group chairman advocates company growth
Date: 16 April 2008
At a time when many haulage companies are struggling, the chairman of the Road Haulage Association (RHA) is expanding his own business.
Speaking to Commercial Motor, RHA head Willie Oliver said his takeover of PJ O'Kane Transport effectively doubles the size of his fleet of haulage vehicles. He is also managing director of Oliver Transport Services in Ireland, and wants to expand into working in Britain.
"We reckoned the easiest option was to take over a business that was already doing that. There's a bit of a recession on in the south [of Ireland] at the moment," he said.
"Our intention is definitely to grow," he added.
"The only way forward in this industry is to grow to survive. There's still some good work out there, which people will pay a realistic rate for. Our attitude is to look for that good work, provide a good service and get a good return."
Other haulage firms may need to consolidate to keep afloat at a time when fuel costs are exceptionally high, and factors such as the London low emission zone are making life difficult for many.
