Congestion charging could affect couriers in Derby

Date: 16 April 2008

A debate is raging about a possible congestion charge scheme in Derby that could affect couriers and owner drivers working in the area.

The Labour group leader in Derby, Chris Williamson, said that congestion charging may be needed to improve the traffic congestion problems the city has.

He said that it will not affect Derby residents, and that for other motorists such as couriers it would be around £2 per day, the Derby Evening Telegraph reports.

However, Conservative Philip Hickson said that a congestion charge would not be beneficial.

"We are absolutely opposed to congestion charging. We don't think the city is big enough to warrant the scheme and we think it is going to be harmful to the economy because it will put people off coming into the city," he said.

"Congestion is a problem in every city but you have got to manage it by having the right facilities - not by punishing motorists."
