LDV Group address eco-concerns in haulage industry

Date: 16 April 2008

Concern for the environment has become an important issue for haulage drivers, and various companies are taking steps to become more eco-friendly.

The LDV Group has been working together with motorsport specialist Prodrive to develop a DC-DC converter that can be used in automotive hybrid and electric vehicles.

"The converter will be more efficient, smaller and lower in cost than those currently available," said LDV's chief executive Evgeniy Vereshchagin.

"The vehicles will recycle energy lost during the braking process through an electronic motor, which can then be used later."

LDV Group is also working with RVL to develop an electric MAXUS light commercial haulage vehicle, which will be available this year.

Emissions from haulage vehicles is becoming an increasingly hot topic. A report by the CarbonNeutral Company estimated that CO2 emissions from logistics vehicles including HGVs and courier vans amounts to 33.7 million tonnes annually.

The issue is also being addressed by the London low emission zone, which came into effect earlier this year and requires haulage vehicles to pay a fee to enter the capital if they are not clean enough.
