Fuel costs could cause the end of free delivery
Date: 15 April 2008
The high price of fuel may cause free delivery to become a thing of the past.
Many consumers have got used to various products being delivered to the home free of charge as part of the service, but a Channel Islands firm has pointed out that this benefit may be consigned to the dustbins of history.
Speaking to the Guernsey Press, the director of haulage company Huelin Renouf, Steve Champion Smith, said that companies offering a free delivery service would not have compensation against price increases at the pumps.
"We are monitoring the cost of diesel per vehicle, as we do all the time," he said.
It is believed that several garages on the island will be forced to put the price of diesel up to £1 per litre soon.
Meanwhile, on the mainland, diesel prices are causing problems for other haulage firms. The average price of diesel is well above £1 per litre, and this is bumping up companies' operating costs.
Thankfully, the chancellor decided to delay a 2p per litre increase in fuel duty until October, rather than introduce it in this year's Budget.
