Speed cameras may be used for littering fines for couriers

Date: 14 April 2008

Speed cameras on the sides of Britain's roads could be used to catch courier drivers and other motorists who throw litter out of their vehicle's window.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the scheme will begin in London this summer, and will see the owners of vehicles, such as owner drivers, issued with fixed-penalty notices if they are snapped littering, either by speed cameras or passers-by with mobile phone cameras.

People would be forced to pay up to £80, although the offence would not lead to a criminal record or points on a driving licence, unless they refused to pay up.

"There is no excuse for littering, particularly from cars, as people can save rubbish inside their car and dispose of it at home," said waste minister Joan Ruddock.

"I am always horrified and angry when I see people throw something from a car."

However, the move may be met with hostility by people concerned about the 'nanny state'.
