More than £500,000 issued for LEZ hauliers
Date: 11 April 2008
More than half a million pounds in fines have been handed out to haulage drivers entering London's new low emission zone (LEZ), the BBC reports.
The scheme means that the heaviest polluting lorries that don't meet emissions requirements have to pay £200 a day to enter the city centre, with a £1,000 fine for those that don't.
On Tuesday this week (April 8th) Transport for London (TfL)said it had issued 543 penalty charge notices - meaning a lot of freight haulage firms had to pay out a lot of money.
A TfL spokesman said: "Just under five per cent of affected vehicles currently driving within the zone each week do not meet the emissions standards, and we expect this figure to fall still further.
"We expect the number of daily charge payments received and penalty charge notices issued to fall as more and more operators comply with the scheme."
The zone is opposed by Liberal Democrat London mayoral candidate Brian Paddick.
