Transsexual haulage truck driver wins discrimination case
Date: 11 April 2008
A transsexual haulage truck driver has won a sexual discrimination case against her former employer.
Vikki-Marie Gaynor, who was born a man and was formerly a soldier, began suffering taunts from other freight drivers at her employer and had her shift unfairly reduced by bosses at Exel Europe.
Ms Gaynor, who began living full-time as a woman in February last year, claimed that Blue Arrow recruitment agency had failed to act on her complaints.
She told the tribunal: "I was very apprehensive about what people would think and my fears were realised when a fellow driver started muttering 'queer' and covered his backside with his hands."
Now Ms Gaynor is waiting to hear how much compensation she will receive following her successful claims.
She told Pink News: "I am absolutely delighted with the result.
"We got exactly what we wanted, which was for it to be recognised that Exel/DHL and Blue Arrow were both guilty of discrimination."
