Freight drivers experience digital tachograph problems
Date: 10 April 2008
Reports are coming through that some freight drivers are experiencing their digital tachographs failing, Motor Transport reports.
Dodds Transport commercial manager John Robson has had three drivers reporting faulty cards, and thinks it could be because they are being stored in wallets.
He explained: "I telephoned the DVLA to report the damaged cards and was asked where the cards were stored. I told the lady the drivers kept them in their wallets.
"She said that if the cards are stored in wallets, next to credit cards, then the magnetic strip on a credit card can render the digi-cards useless."
He expressed concern that the DVLA was not warning people to keep the cards away from credit cards, even though it was aware that it was a common problem.
The licensing agency, however, said it was not planning on putting out warnings about the problem, saying that it is the responsibility of the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency to do so.
