Concern over Britain's 'antique' roads

Date: 09 April 2008

A newspaper has begun a campaign to highlight the poor state of some of Britain's roads and to try to encourage transport officials to make improvements.

Hauliers are expected to benefit from the push, which has been launched by the Halifax Evening Courier.

The newspaper says that Britain's road system is "reaching gridlock" and that more needs to be done to help haulage drivers travel across the country.

"Haulage businesses and private hire companies, already creaking under the burden of fuel charges and excise duty, struggle to deliver their loads and customers on time," the paper states.

As part of its Let's Get Moving campaign, the publication will be writing a series of articles highlighting current problems on the country's highways.

Yesterday, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) said that better organisation was needed with regard to road maintenance works which can cause huge disruptions to drivers.

"The government must increase the funding provided to local authorities in order that they are able to maintain their roads in a fit and proper condition," said the FTA's head of urban access policy, Stephen Kelly.
