Sales of courier vans 'up'

Date: 09 April 2008

More couriers were on the road last month with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reporting sales of vans were up.

Despite a tough economic climate, it seems that van drivers are still splashing out on new vehicles, with the figures showing sales for this type of transport rose two per cent on February.

The data shows that the number of vans sold throughout March 2008 was 339,961 – up 3.9 per cent on the previous year.

"Strong van and particularly truck registrations in March reflect the underlying strength of the economy," said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.

"Good order books suggest that the trend will continue through much of the year."

Meanwhile van drivers are being warned to keep an eye on the speedometer if they have purchased a new vehicle.

A survey by Vauxhall has revealed that 85 per cent of drivers do not know the correct speed limits when driving a van.
