Government increases funding for foreign haulage truck checks
Date: 08 April 2008
The government has announced an extra round of funding for more checks on foreign freight trucks operating in the UK.
Jim Fitzpatrick, the road safety minister, said he will provide £24 million more over three years to increase the number of checks by 50 per cent.
The money will also help the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) open two new enforcement sites.
This funding has been welcomed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA), whose spokesman said: "Lorries, including those from overseas, carry out a vital role in supplying the everyday needs of the whole of the UK population.
"It is absolutely essential that they are maintained and operated in the safest possible condition. FTA wishes VOSA well in the application of these new resources."
The FTA said it was a shame, though, that the government hadn't chosen to introduce a charging scheme for foreign freight vehicles coming into the UK.
