Volvo receives funding for eco-technology
Date: 04 April 2008
The Swedish Energy Agency has pledged support for AB Volvo in the testing of energy efficient technology for heavy vehicles.
A field test involving the DME fuel - characterised by high energy efficiency and low exhaust emissions - will be supported by a £1.08 million grant from the agency.
It will include the trial of 14 haulage trucks as part of a project that will demonstrate the whole technology chain, "from biomass to fuel in the trucks and also includes distribution and filling stations for DME".
Third-generation DME technology is being tested. The fuel is produced via the gasification of biomass and fossil raw materials. This produces a gas that is catalysed to produce DME.
Jonathan James of the consultancy Faber Maunsell said that there has been a shift in the way freight companies view 'green' issues. They are taking eco-issues more seriously, he said.
