Highways Agency outlines road improvement measures for couriers and others

Date: 03 April 2008

The Highways Agency is planning to create a more reliable and safer road network for couriers and other motorists.

In its annual business plan for 2008/09, the group has set out measures it will take such as extending the hard shoulder running programme on motorways around Birmingham, and queue detection systems.

There will also be various road improvement schemes carried out, such as widening the M1 between junctions J6a and J10.

The Highways Agency will also look to award a 30-year private finance contract to design, build and operate more than 63 miles of the M25 - all measures which will hopefully help couriers around the country.

Chief executive Archie Robertson said: "This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first stretch of completed motorway. The people who built our roads then would be astonished to see the volume of freight and passenger journeys that they carry now.

"As we look forward to 2011 it is clear our aims are to provide the information and infrastructure necessary to help these drivers use our roads in a safe and reliable way, whilst also taking the steps necessary to tackle the impact this may have on the environment."
