Haulage firm in hot water over tachograph offences

Date: 03 April 2008

A haulage firm, M&M Howden, has got in hot water after falsifying tachograph records.

The company's director, Mark Howden, and traffic clerk Philip Appleby, both pleaded guilty to tachograph offences, and Mr Howden was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Also, 22 other drivers working for the company were part of the conspiracy and two of them were sent to prison. Others got fines or community service.

The methods used to doctor the tachographs included using false names and removing fuses so that the tachographs didn't work properly. Also, dummy charts were used to give false impressions about driving times.

These offences were exposed following an investigation by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

VOSA's Alex Fiddes said: "This case highlights VOSA's determination to bring to account operators and drivers who put others at risk by flouting the law and compromising road safety."
