Firms team up for cleaner haulage truck engine development
Date: 02 April 2008
Cleaner fuel in haulage vehicles could be a step closer now that ITM Power and Roush Technologies are working together to develop hydrogen-powered engines, Motor Transport reports.
Roush will adapt existing regular combustion engine vehicles and develop new power units that will run on hydrogen. Meanwhile, ITM will provide refuelling rigs - patented electroysers that can produce hydrogen from water or electricity.
The system should give haulage vehicles a range of between 40 and 60 miles before they need to recharge. Costs are not yet clear, and no manufacturer is yet attached to the project.
Environmental issues are becoming more important in the freight industry. Jonathan James of consultancy Faber Maunsell believes that there has been a shift in the way people think about them.
He said: "Companies are taking corporate social responsibility, and environmental issues, much more seriously than before, and there has been a big take-up of eco-driving schemes."
