Truck maker introduces improved sat nav

Date: 01 April 2008

Truck maker Continental has introduced a sat nav system that will help haulage vehicles avoid getting stuck under low bridges or in narrow roads.

The problem of sat navs sending truckers down the wrong roads is a growing one, but the new VDO Dayton Truck SatNav helps freight drivers to avoid problem areas, and also gives information about truck stops, petrol stations and more, Commercial Motor reports.

Recently truckers group the Freight Transport Association called for sat nav systems that are more compatible with larger freight vehicles.

The group's James Hookham said: "There are too many stories of lorries getting stuck or using inappropriate roads because of sat-nav systems, and there is a lot more suppliers can do to make their systems more useful to the commercial vehicle driver.

"However, we must never forget that ultimately, whether in a lorry or a car, the driver should not just rely on instructions from his sat-nav, but must use his own common sense. Blindly following the advice of an inanimate computer is not always the best policy."
