Overseas freight drivers face more challenging conditions

Date: 01 April 2008

Freight drivers from overseas are far more likely to be involved in a crash than British truckers.

Government stats show that trucks are much less likely than cars to get in an accident, but visiting trucks bump up the numbers a bit.

Truckers' group the Road Haulage Association said: "Foreign truck drivers face more challenging driving conditions in the UK than they do elsewhere in the EU.

"The roads are more congested and they are driving on the 'wrong side of the road'. The Department for Transport's Fresnel lens initiative has greatly reduced side-swiping and is an initiative for which the government deserves credit. We can build on that, by educating foreign drivers further at ports of entry."

As well as this, the group warned that overseas freight drivers must take care not to operate illegally, and called for EU countries to have the power to ban foreign drivers from their roads if that action is needed.
