Kent County Council looks to help haulage drivers

Date: 27 March 2008

Kent County Council (KCC) will take up work to ensure that hauliers have access to the continent.

Motor Transport reports that the Channel Corridor Partnership (CCP) is set to close after four years of working to promote the interests and needs of haulage drivers crossing the Channel.

Now, KCC will use a recent report from MDS Transmodal to look at ways capacity and facilities for haulage drivers can be expanded.

The report showed that haulage traffic using the Channel Corridor rose 12 per cent between 2001 and 2005. However, it predicted that it would increase by 85 per cent between 2005 and 2030.

KCC principal projects officer Stephen Dukes explained to the news source: "With CCP closing we will now pick up some of the issues identified in the report."

He added that one of the key issues that needed to be resolved centred on the lack of capacity for lorry parking in both the Calais area and in Kent.

"Any new lorry park needs to be multifunctional. We're keen to talk to [government agencies] about using the parks for vehicle inspections," Mr Dukes added.
