Hauliers are struggling to cope with rising fuel costsPopular

Date: 26 March 2008

The industry body which represents the interests of the UK's haulage professionals has said increased fuel costs are seriously impacting the industry.

According to the Road Haulage Association, some hauliers are reporting that they are increasingly finding customers are either refusing or unable to accept increased haulage charges for fear of the consequences to their own businesses.

The RHA added that it was vital that hauliers were able to pass on extra costs so they could continue to make some profit.

"Hauliers should note that it is government policy for such costs to be passed on otherwise they would not be seeking higher rates of fuel duty," explained RHA chief executive Roger King.

"Haulage is not a charitable business, but increasingly a business of survival.

"We are not a cushion for British business and so must follow the example of the airlines by adopting a 'pay up or no haul' policy."

Earlier this month, haulage professionals welcomed the news that the government would delay a 2p rise in fuel duty for six months.
