German trucker jailed for 90 days

Date: 26 March 2008

A German haulage driver who fell asleep at the wheel and crashed on the M25 has been jailed for 90 days, RoadTransport.com reports.

Johann Reimer, from Aachen, has also been banned from driving in the UK for two years.

The accident happened on September 13th, 2006 between junctions 26 and 25 of the London orbital motorway, at 4.30am. Reimer, who was driving a 44-tonne freight truck, was seriously injured in the smash.

Several other haulage trucks stopped to offer assistance, including a milk tanker, which parked straddling the hard shoulder and the outside lane.

Then another truck driven by another German driver, Markus Peeren, crashed into the milk tanker and Mr Peeren died at the scene.

Reimer was charged with dangerous driving, but failed to appear in court in August last year. He was arrested on February 5th this year as he was coming through Dover in another haulage truck.
