Freight driver hailed as hero after helping at crash

Date: 25 March 2008

A freight driver from Northern Ireland was hailed as a hero after helping in the rescue of another lorry driver who had been in an accident.

Paul Liken helped the driver, who was in a truck belonging to haulage firm Sawyers, after he hit the back of an oil tanker, Belfast Today reports.

The accident happened on the M6 at Cheshire, and Mr Liken had been on his way to the port at Cairnryan when he noticed something was wrong.

He rushed over to the driver and was able to use his knowledge of first aid to help.

"The driver seemed to be gurgling," he said. "He had severe head injuries, facial lacerations - his stomach was crushed right against the steering column.

"Until help arrived I was just doing all I could do to keep him awake – he was drifting in and out of consciousness and I was talking to him, telling him I was also a driver from Northern Ireland."

The man was eventually freed and taken to hospital, where he was believed to be recovering.
