Hauliers reminded to carry out daily checks on trucks
Date: 19 March 2008
Haulage drivers have been reminded that they've got to carry out a daily inspection on their vehicles and fill out driver defect reports.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) says that a key element of the Operator Compliance Risk Score (OCRS) system used by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) is the role of haulage drivers.
VOSA uses the OCRS system in its enforcement, and this means that road haulage companies need to be vigilant in making sure their vehicles meet legal standards.
Drivers have a crucial role to play, but checks carried out by the FTA show that many drivers do not always fulfil their obligations. This leads to "unnecessary, inconvenient and costly vehicle down-time".
But now the FTA has produced a ten-minute DVD showing why daily checks are important before a vehicle leaves base. The DVD comes with printable documents such as test papers, answer papers and manager's notes.
