Possible further Royal Mail strikes could benefit couriers
Date: 19 March 2008
A new round of postal strikes at Royal Mail could be on the cards over pension changes, meaning that other courier companies could benefit.
The Unite union balloted Royal Mail managers and found that 85 per cent rejected the company's proposed pension changes.
"This is a massive rejection of Royal Mail's decision to reduce the future pensions of thousands of working people," said Unite national secretary Paul Reuter.
"It would be absolute folly if the business were to ignore their loyal staff. Following months of consultations the managers within Royal Mail are sending a clear message to [chief executive] Adam Crozier to sit down with the unions and negotiate a sensible agreement on our future pensions."
The union has warned that, if Royal Mail does not respond, it "will be left with no choice than to consider balloting for industrial action".
Last year a series of strikes at Royal Mail meant that small businesses opted to use courier firms, with companies including TNT greatly benefiting.
